Formula One Update

Sebastian Vettel has won the final round of the 2010 Formula One season in Abu Dhabi and become the youngest ever World Champion.

The result also nets Red Bull the Championship double after they sealed the Constructor’s Championship at the last round in Brazil.

Title contenders Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber both suffered at the hands of poorly timed pit stops, finishing seventh and eighth respectively, in what turned out to be a somewhat anti-climatic race.

McLaren ended their season with a solid second and third place finish for Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

The 2011 season will see new cars, new rules, a new tyre sponsor as Bridgestone make way for Pirelli and the re-introduction of the KERS device. As for the continued domination of Red Bull and Vettel, we will have to wait and see.

The final driver standings are as follows:

1. Sebastian Vettel 256

2. Fernando Alonso 252

3. Mark Webber 242

Formula One Update: 2010 Season Wrap Up

The final and deciding race of the 2010 Formula One season will be underway shortly, the result of which will leave many people happy and many others devastated.

Qualifying is completed giving us our top five: Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button and Mark Webber.

Alonso leads the Championship on 246 points, Webber is eight points back on 238, while Vettel sits on 231, nine points ahead of Hamilton’s 222.

If Vettel wins the race and Alonso finishes in fifth place or worse, the German wins the title. If Webber wins and Alonso finishes no better than third, the Australian wins the title. If Vettel wins the race ahead of his team-mate and Alonso takes third, neither Red Bull driver wins the title and the Spaniard takes his third World Championship. This is going to be well worth watching.

Let’s be honest though, all three contenders would be deserving winners.

Vettel has had a phenomenal year, particularly in terms of qualifying performances, with ten pole positions next to his name this season. Even if you disagree with some of his race tactics, there is no denying his raw talent behind the wheel of a Formula One car.

Alonso has been here before, twice, winning the title in 2005 and 2006 for Renault. Despite being relatively quiet in the last few years he is always a driver to watch. His commitment and car control have always been second to none.

And Webber, the epitome of the Aussie battler. Joining the world of Formula One in 2002 for Minardi and then driving for Jaguar and Williams before coming to Red Bull, Webber has always been a hard worker. He’s got the skill, he’s got the car but will his other great career difficulty, luck, find him when he needs it most.

In only a few more hours one of the most exciting seasons of Formula One for many years will wrap up in Abu Dhabi and we will have a new World Champion. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has taken his fourth win for the season and second in a row after winning the Singapore Grand Prix night race ahead of Red Bull team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

Following on from his win at Monza, Alonso again started from pole and put in another excellent drive making clear his intentions for this year’s Championship.

While for Vettel the race was a game of follow the leader, Webber’s night was much more action packed with the Australian fighting his way up from last position after the team decided to pit him early and change to the harder tyre.

The race proved costly for Championship contender Lewis Hamilton, when on Lap 36 as he and Webber battled for third place, contact was made leaving the McLaren with broken suspension giving Hamilton his second DNF in two races.

After round fifteen, the driver standings are as follows:

1. Mark Webber 202

2. Fernando Alonso 191

3. Lewis Hamilton 182

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has secured his first win on home soil for his new team by winning the Italian Grand Prix in Monza from pole, ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button and Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa.

After dropping a place to the fast starting Button, Alonso settled into a solid rhythm as both he and Massa showed good car speed in the Ferraris.

Then Button pitted on Lap 36 giving the Spaniard the lead which he managed to hold onto after pitting one lap later thanks to a sensational pit stop.

From here the race was his.

The day proved less positive for the Championship leaders with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton finishing his day on the opening lap following a touch with Massa and Red Bull’s Mark Webber having to work hard to finish seventh after a disappointing start from fourth.

Despite the difficulties, the Australian again regains the Championship lead.

After round fourteen, the driver standings are as follows:

1. Mark Webber 187

2. Lewis Hamilton 182

3. Fernando Alonso 166

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton survived the weather, the carnage and an off to win the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa on a day many other drivers will want to forget.

The drama began early with pole-sitter Mark Webber, having a shocking start in the Red Bull as a result of a clutch problem.

This allowed Hamilton, Renault’s Robert Kubica, McLaren’s Jenson Button, Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and the Force India of Adrian Sutil to all pass, leaving the Australian in seventh position.

A brief shower on the opening lap caused low grip levels which saw many drivers run wide at the Bus Stop chicane and brought Rubens Barrichello’s 300th Formula One Gran Prix to an abrupt end when he locked the brakes and slid into Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. While Alonso managed to recover to the pits, deciding to change to the intermediate tyre while others stayed out despite the slippery conditions, his race ended after a spin only six laps from the finish.

Up the front Hamilton was in rhythm and had a solid lead over his team-mate until third placed Vettel had a moment behind Button that saw the German spear right into the side of the Englishman’s McLaren. While Vettel managed to nurse the car back to the pits, the race was over for Button.

Kubica was holding onto second place with Webber now in third but a moment of distraction on the Renault drivers behalf resulted in a change of positions in pit lane.

Then with the finish in sight the rain came back and was getting heavier, this was the last chance for Webber to try and catch Hamilton but the Brit held on, despite an excursion through the gravel at Rivage on Lap 35, to win by 1.5 seconds.

After round thirteen, the driver standings are as follows:

1. Lewis Hamilton 182

2. Mark Webber 179

3. Sebastian Vettel 151

Red Bull’s Mark Webber has his fourth win for the 2010 season after taking out the Hungarian Grand Prix ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, in a day full of surprises.

Vettel started the race well from pole while Alonso moved ahead of Webber separating the two Red Bulls with the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa holding onto  fourth place.

It quickly became apparent that the pace Red Bull showed in qualifying was genuine with Vettel consistently stretching his lead by over a second a lap to Alonso. This culminated in an 11.7 second lead by the time most of the field pitted following a safety car being brought out due to debris on the track.

Webber’s chances of a good finish appeared dashed when he was not brought in to pit under the safety car and instead found himself leading the race with Vettel in second.

Then with the two Red Bulls behind the safety car, Vettel appeared to miss the restart slowing significantly and bunching up the rest of the field just two corners before the safety car returned to the pits. This gave Webber a large gap over the rest of the field and an opportunity to change strategies and try for a win.

Vettel’s error, that resulted in a drive-through penalty for falling more than 10 car lengths behind the safety car, and Webber’s pace, combined to allow the Australian to pull out a 23.7 second advantage over second place Alonso meaning he could pit without losing the lead.

Webber finally crossing the line 17.8 seconds ahead of Alonso.

Adding to the day’s drama was the engine failure on the opening lap for Jaime Alguesuari’s Toro Rosso, Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren losing drive and coming to halt on Lap 24 and an incident on Lap 66 between Williams’ Rubens Barrichello and his former Ferrari team-mate, Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher, that resulted in the German being handed a 10-place grid penalty for the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix for illegally impeding a car during an overtaking manoeuvre.

After round twelve, the driver standings are as follows:

1. Mark Webber 161

2. Lewis Hamilton 157

3. Sebastian Vettel 151

Ferrari has been fined US$100,000 by the FIA following race stewards judging that they breached sporting regulations in claiming their second one-two finish for the year after Felipe Massa allowed his team-mate, Fernando Alonso, to take the win at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. The case has now been referred to the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).

The situation arose after a dramatic start in which the pole-sitter, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, attempted to force Alonso towards the pit wall leaving Massa space to pass both drivers on the outside and take the race lead.

As the race progressed it became clear that Alonso was consistently faster than his Ferrari team-mate and, following much team radio communication, on Lap 49 at the exit of Turn Six, Massa obviously slowed to let Alonso through.

While Ferrari was puppeteering their race up front, Vettel maintained his third position with the two McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button finishing ahead of Mark Webber who’s race was tainted by an oil consumption issue in the other Red Bull.

After round eleven, the driver standings are as follows:

1. Lewis Hamilton 157

2. Jenson Button 143

3. Mark Webber 136
